Our Breakfast Program at Makwendam started with a goal to provide meaningful leadership opportunities for our Grade 6 students while ensuring that all students have access to a nutritious snack to start their day. We created a breakfast cart that’s available to students from Grades 1 to 6 as they enter the school each morning, allowing them to grab a snack and enjoy it while attending our virtual morning announcements.
Our Breakfast Crew, led by our Grade 6 students, also delivers a selection of breakfast items to each Kindergarten class and our Communications class, which enter from different locations. This program is making mornings smoother, healthier, and more connected for our entire school community.
Our Student Nutrition Program makes a profound difference in our school community. By ensuring that students start their day with a nutritious snack, we’re setting them up for better focus, energy, and readiness to learn. These programs are vital, as they nurture not only healthy bodies but also positive attitudes toward school and learning.
When our students see the breakfast cart, we hear comments such as:
"I love the breakfast cart",
"I look forward to seeing the breakfast cart every morning; it feels like a treat",
"I like that there’s always something good to eat if I don't have breakfast" and
"I feel like the school really cares about us with the breakfast cart here."
Our Breakfast Crew has been an incredible way to foster leadership among our students. Through hands-on involvement in organizing, preparing, and serving snacks, students are developing responsibility, teamwork, and a sense of pride in helping their peers. It’s inspiring to see them take on these roles with dedication and watch them grow into leaders who make a real impact each morning.
Our breakfast program has become a wonderful addition to Makwendam, giving every student a nutritious start to their day and fostering leadership among our Grade 6 Breakfast Crew. With the breakfast cart available, students feel ready to learn, connect, and enjoy their day. The Breakfast Crew proudly ensures that no student begins the day hungry by offering fresh items to all students and supporting their peers with care and dedication.
We are so grateful to Halton Food For Thought for the funds to get our program started and keep our program going, to families in the Makwendam community who donate products and funds and to all of our Makwendam staff who assist with purchasing, sorting and organizing items so that our Breakfast Crew can deliver a healthy snack to students regularly.
Here’s to fueling young minds and building strong leaders—one breakfast at a time!
